By reaction of isovaleric aldehyde with cyanothioacetamide and cyclohexane-1,3-dione, 3-cyano-4-isobutyl-5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydroquinoline-1-thiol has been obtained, and subsequently used in synthesis of the corresponding substituted 2-alkylthiohexahydroquinolines. 1999 KluwerAcademic/Plenum.
