nanocubes from 26.95 ꢂ 0.39 nm (n ¼ 106) to 21.47 ꢂ 0.32 nm (n ¼
98) and 13.71 ꢂ 0.21 nm (n ¼ 86) respectively (Fig. 1g–i). Since excess
anions influenced the mesoscopic transformation of amorphous
precursors to the final nanocrystals,15 the size of PbSe nanocubes
decreasing with decreasing Pb : Se molar ratio may be attributed to
the binding interactions between excess Se precursors and inorganic
surface in the quasi-biosystem.

In summary, this work demonstrated a biomimetic method for
controllably and directly synthesizing PbSe nanocubes in aqueous
phase, which employed environmentally friendly reducing agents to
react at low temperature (90 ꢀC) and avoided the application in any
combustible, explosive, and toxic organic reagents. In the designed
quasi-biosystem, biomolecules kept their physiological activities to
simulate the conditions of two biochemical processes, reduction of
Na2SeO3 and detoxification of Pb2+. The mesoscopic transformation
from amorphous precursors to mesocrystals and finally to PbSe
nanocubes was clearly demonstrated by TEM and EDX, suggesting
a non-classical crystallization occurred during the formation of PbSe
nanocubes. The nature of the bio-molecules as the surface ligands in
the shape evolution of the PbSe nanocrystals was investigated
showing that the glutamic acid and glycine residues in glutathione
also played important roles besides the sulfhydryl group of cysteine
residue. Size control of the PbSe nanocubes was also realized in the
quasi-biosystem. This biomimetic strategy may be extended to con-
trollably prepare other nanomaterials under mild conditions,
providing an environment-friendly way for the sustainable chemistry.
