The reaction of trityl cation with threo-3-deuterio-2-(trimethylstannyl)butane to produce 2-butenes was shown to proceed with about 99percent anti stereochemistry.The primary and secondary isotope effects are 3.7 and 1.1, respectively.These data are interpreted in terms of a hydride-abstraction mechanism leading to a ?-?-conjugated carbocation which subsequently loses the trimethyltin group.
