Arylamides of amino-protected β-hydroxy-α-amino acids were cyclized to optically pure, cis- or trans-3-amino-1-aryl-2-azetidinone derivatives by an intramolecular S_N2 reaction mediated by diethyl azodicarboxylate and triphenylphosphine or hexamethylphosphorus triamide.
