The reaction of a stoichiometric amount of bromine or iodine with the trinuclear cluster anion ^- (1) results in the formation of the neutral dinuclear clusters Ru2(CO)5(PPh3)(μ₂-PPh2)(μ₂-X) (2: X=Br, 3: X=I).From the reaction of iodine, in addition the dinuclear cluster are obtained Ru2(CO)6(μ₂-PPh2)(μ₂-I) (4) and Ru2(CO)4(PPh3)2(μ₂-I)2 (5) as byproducts.An excess of iodine degrades the trinuclear cluster 1 to the known mononuclear complex Ru(CO)3(PPh3)I2 (6), which readily converts into the dinuclear system Ru2(CO)4(PPh3)2I2(μ₂-I)2 (7) that resolves into two isomers.
