Photolysis of hexa-t-butylcyclotrisilane in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridyl proceeds by <4+1>cycloaddition of di-t-butylsilene to the nitrogen atoms and by <2+2>cycloaddition of tetra-t-butyldisilene across the CC double bond in the 3,4-position.The addition product forms deep-violet, extremely air-sensitive crystals whose structure was determined by a complete NMR study.
