In summary, atovaquone derivatives were designed and synthe-
sized as new cytotoxic and apoptosis inducing agents. Both 2-pip-
erazinyl analogues (2) and 2-piperidinyl analogues (3) displayed
good cytotoxic activities against a panel of cancer cell lines. The
study also indicated that the cell growth inhibitory activity might
be related to apoptosis induced by the compounds. Further mech-
anism studies are under going and will be reported in due course.
