Benzeneacetonitriles substituted with lactam moieties in the ortho-position cyclize under the influence of a base, dependent on the ring-size of the lactam function, to dihydropyrrolo-,tetrahydropyrido<1,2-α>indole or dihydro-1-benzazepin derivatives, respectively.
