In a continuously stirred tank recator (CSTR) the reaction between bromate and thiocyanate in acidic medium (HClO4) exhibits sustained oscillations in the potential of a platinum redox over a wide range of flow rates and input concentrations.In closed system environments and in excess bromate concentrations the stoichiometry of the reaction is 6BrO3(1-) + 5SCN(1-) + 2H2O -> 3Br2 + 5SO4(2-) + 5CN(1-) + 4H(1+).The production of bromine is preceded by a finite induction period.On varying the dynamical variable of the flow rate of reactants into the CSTR at fixed input concentrations, one observes various oscillatory states.The bifurcation sequence is highlighted by persistent quasi-periodic behavior.
