Treatment of diethyl 2-(3-mesyloxypropyl) malonate with KSCOCH3/DMF at room temperature gave 2,2-dicarbethoxytetrahydrothiophene. The reaction can be used to prepare isopenams in good yield. {A figure is presented}.
