The first examples of transition metal complexes having a saturated carbocyclic alkylidene bridge have been conveniently synthesized by means of a modified diazoalkane route: reaction of bis<(μ-carbonyl)(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhodium> (Rh=Rh) (1a) and the corresponding compound 1b with cyclohexanone hydrazone (2) in the presence of activated manganese dioxide as oxidizing agent gives the μ-cyclohexanylidene complexes 3a and 3b, in 86-95percent isolated yield.Both thermal- and electron-impact induced decompositions of these dimetallaspiranes give cyclohexene asthe predominant elimination product.
