Lithium amidotrihydroborate (LiH₂NBH₃, LAB) is a new and highly nucleophilic reducing agent that is easily prepared by deprotonation of the commercial reagent borane-ammonia complex (H₂NBH₃) with n-BuLi in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 0°C. LAB is found to be a superior reagent for the transformation of tertiary amides into the corresponding primary alcohols.
