One-pot synthesis of dialkyldifluoromethane and alkyldifluoromethyl iodides from the reaction of difluorodiiodomethane with alkenes in sulphinatodehalogenation systems

The reaction of difluorodiiodomethane (CF₂I₂) with alkenes (RCH=CH₂), initiated by Na₂S₂O₄/NaHCO₃, is described. When the reaction is carried out at low temperature (5-8 °C), the monoadducts RCHICH₂CF₂I are produced, whereas at 20 °C bis-adducts (RCH₂CH₂)CF₂ are the only products. The results are rationalized in terms of a single electron transfer mechanism.
