The effect of water vapour on the catalytic destruction of cyanogen chloride (CNCl) over a commercial Pt/α-alumina catalyst is to increase the overall conversion of CNCl, apparently by hydrolysis, providing a reaction path parallel to oxidation; the presence of water vapour also lowers the apparent activation energy for CNCl destruction, and the selectivity for CO formation is negligible in the presence of water vapour.
