The partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas was studied in the presence of Pt- and Ni-containing catalysts. A substantial difference in the behavior of the isotopic label added with the CO2 molecule in the case of the reaction on Pt/ZrO2 and foam nickel. In the presence of Pt/ZrO2, there was no noticeable transfer of the isotopic label to the CO molecules. On the Ni catalyst, 13CO was formed in substantial amounts, which could probably be explained by the redox reaction of 13CO2 with metallic nickel under oxygen-free conditions behind the zone of the main reaction of methane oxidation.
