A procedure for enzyme-catalyzed organic synthesis is described in which regeneration of NAD(P)H from NAD(P) is accomplished by the electrochemical reduction of oxidized to reduced methyl viologen (MV²⁺ --> MV¹⁺) followed by flavoenzyme-catalyzed reduction of the nicotinamide cofactor by this MV⁺¹ (Scheme I).
