A new efficient synthesis of 1-deoxy-L-xylulose (1) is presented. The key step is achieved by a highly enantioselective aldol addition of hydroxyacetone to benzyloxyacetaldehyde via antibody catalysis. The synthesis described here should provide a convenient route to isotopically labeled derivatives.
