18. A nitrogen degassed solution of DMAD (3 mmol), 2-propanol (60 mmol) and
benzophenone (1.2 mmol) in acetonitrile (60 ml) was irradiated in a Rayonet
reactor (350 nm lamps) for 45 min. Solvent removal and chromatography on
silica gave dimethyl (Z)-2-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)but-2-enedioate 3a
(37%) and methyl 2,2-dimethyl-5-oxo-2,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate 5a
(31%).
