REACTIVITY OF THE 5-HEXENYL RADICAL TOWARD THE ANION OF 2-NITROPROPANE AND BOROHYDRIDE ANION

The 5-hexenyl radical adds to the anion of 2-nitropropane with a rate constant of ca. 1x10⁶ L/mol-s at 40 deg C.Hydrogen atom abstraction from BH4(1-) occurs more slowly than abstraction from CH3O(1-) and with a rate constant less then 1x10⁴ L/mol-s at 30 deg C.The reaction of Δ⁵-hexenylmercury chloride with sodium borohydride in MeOH/NaOH proceeds via hydrogen abstraction by the hexenyl radical from RHgH and not from NaBH4.
