In tetrahydrofuran the reaction between Fp2Mg and CO2 gives the symmetrical metallocarboxylate (FpCO2)2Mg, which can be alkylated to give the ester FpCO2Me; its activated ester FpC(OMe)2⁺ serves as a C₁ template for reduction to FpCH2OMe.
