Inspection of the antimicrobial activity of the synthe-
sized cationic Schiff bases revealed that increasing the
hydrophobic chain length and introducing the methoxy
groups in their chemical structures of the synthesized
uracil-based surfactants considerably increased their bio-
cidal activity. The most efficient biocidal activity was
monitored for the anisaldehyde derivatives: 2,4-dihydroxy-
6-[(4-methoxybenzylidene)amino]-1,3-dialkyl pyrimidinedi-
ium dibromide in the sequence of increasing the hydrophobic
chain length as follows:
UBL [ UBM [ UBC [ UBS.
This can be related to the chemical structures of these
derivatives which contain two positively charged centers
on the nitrogen atoms and also to the increasing tendency
of the (-OCH3) group towards adsorption at the biological
membrane. The promising inhibition efficiency of these
compounds against the sulfate reducing bacteria facilitates
them to be applicable in the petroleum field as new
categories of SRB biocides.

activities near the conventional cationic biocides.
2. Quaternization of the uracil derivatives considerably
increases their biocidal activities.
