α-Ferrocenylcarbinols, readily obtained by direct condensation of aldehydes or ketones with ferrocene, react smoothly with mercaptosuccinic acid to give ferrocenylmethylthiosuccinic acids.The optically active dimethyl (R)-mercaptosuccinate provides a way for the resolution of tertiary alcohols.
