both of them increase with the value of ω. Arrhenius
activation energies Ea of isooctane are larger and in-
crease with ω more significantly than that of n-decane.
Preexponential factor A is related to the effective col-
lisions. The reactant molecules CV and NaOH are
restricted in water pool, and the restriction becomes
smaller as the value of ω increases. Thus, the effec-
tive collisions of CV and NaOH increases with ω, and
therefore, the value of A increases with ω. Figure 5
shows the plot of activation energy Ea against the mo-
lar ratio ω, which linearly increases with ω and may be
expressed by: Ea = (0.46 0.03)ω + (58.7 0.6) for
water/AOT/n-decane microemulsion and Ea = (0.83
0.04)ω + (58.9
0.7) for water/AOT/isooctane
microemulsion.
Comparing the two linear relations between the ac-
tivation energy of the reaction and ω for water/AOT/n-
decane and water/AOT/isooctane, we found that the
slope of the linear equation for isooctane is signifi-
cantly larger than that for n-decane, while the inter-
cepts are almost the same. This indicates that the dif-
ference of penetration effect is negligible when the
water pool is small; however, it becomes significant
as the size of water pool increases. As was pointed
out earlier, the penetration may change the portion of
the conformations of AOT molecules, and, therefore,
the interactions among CV, CVAOT, AOT, water, and
OH−, which possibly further changes the energy bar-
rier of the formation of active complex CVOH. The
difference in penetration between n-decane and isooc-
tane results in the difference in the activation energies
of the reactions in the media of water/AOT/n-decane
and water/AOT/isooctane.
