Dimethyl carbonate, dimethyl formamide were purchased from
Spectrochem, India, and methanol was purchased from Merck,
India. All the chemicals were used as received from suppliers.

6.2. DABCO–DMC IL synthesis
2 B. Katryniok, S. Paul and F. Dumeignil, ChemSusChem, 2011,
4, 665.
The DABCO–DMC IL was prepared by reuxing DABCO–DMC
mixture (molar ratio 1 : 6, DABCO (2.02 g) 18 mmol and DMC
(9.72 g) 108 mmol) for 5 hours. Thereaer, excess DMC was
removed on rotary evaporator and the resulting IL (DABCO–
DMC IL) was used as catalyst for the reaction of DMC with GLY.
Ionic liquid prepared was characterized by NMR analysis. NMR
analysis was carried out on a Bruker Avance 500, 400 and 200
wide bore spectrometer equipped with a superconducting
magnet. Thermal analysis (TG-DTA) of the ionic liquid was
conducted using aÀP1yris Diamond TGA analyzer with a heating
rate of 10 ꢀC min under nitrogen atmosphere and melting
point was measured on melting point apparatus.

6.3. Experimental procedure for reaction DMC with GLY
6 (a) A. Takagaki, K. Iwatani, S. Nishimura and K. Ebitani,
One pot synthesis of GD from DMC and GLY was carried out in a
50 ml round bottom ask equipped with a reux condenser
under vigorous stirring. In a typical run, 2 mol% of catalyst with
respect to GLY was charged to the 50 ml round bottom ask
containing GLY 2 g (21.73 mmol) and DMC 5.87 g (65.19 mmol).
The reaction was carried out at a reux temperature by keeping
the oil bath temperature at 100 ꢀC for the selected reaction time.
During the course of the reaction, the temperature decreased
from 88 to 71 ꢀC as the reaction progressed. The drop in
temperature was because of the formation of methanol as the
reaction progressed. The standard reaction was carried out for
30 min. The reaction mixture was cooled and it was diluted with
N,N-dimethyl formamide, and a sample was taken out for
analysis. The products were analyzed by gas chromatography on
an Agilent 6890 gas chromatograph with HP-Innowax capillary
column (30.0 m  0.53 mm  1.00 mm lm thickness). Identi-
cation of products was done with the help of GC-MS analysis
on an Agilent 6890N gas chromatograph coupled to an Agilent
5973 mass spectrometer using HP-Innowax capillary column of
30 m  0.53 mm  1 mm dimensions.
