half-lives than the native cytidine (Table 1). This confirmed
our hypothesis that fusing additional aromatic rings onto the
pyrimidine core may retain substrate viability by CDA. Further
analysis indicated that the thieno- and isothiazolo-based
analogs improved binding affinity and accelerated deamina-
tion rates while a methyl substitution onto the thiophene
slightly diminished binding affinity (Table 1). We were also
