Spectral, magnetic, thermal and electro-chemical studies on ethyl-α-(N- phenylthiocarbamyl)acetoacetate complexes

Complexes of ethyl-α-(N-phenylthiocarbamyl)acetoacetate (HEPTA) with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pd(II) have been prepared and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, molar conductance, magnetic moment and spectral (UV-Visible, ESR and IR) studies. IR spectra show that HEPTA behaves in a neutral or mononegative bidentate manner. A tetrahedral structure is proposed for the Co(II) complex while a square-planar structure is proposed for the Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) complexes. The thermal stability and the decomposition steps of [Ni(EPTA)₂] and [Cu(EPTA)(OAc)] were investigated with the help of TG thermograms. The Ni(II) and Co(II) complexes show two well defined electrode processes M(I)/M(II) and M(II)/M(III) in dimethylform-amide(DMF), while the Cu(II) complex shows one electrode couple assigned to Cu(II/I).
