Treatment of 2,4-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA, 5% in CHCl₃) affords, in almost quantitative yield calix[4]resorcinarene octamethyl ether, which on demethylation and acetylation yields the derived octa-acetate.
