Zr2ON2 has been prepared by solid state reaction of ZrO2 with Zr3N4. The crystal structure (Bixbyite-type) was refined using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction methods. The results indicate a nitrogen-oxygen-ordering. As detected by high temperature XRD experiments, Zr2ON2 decomposes at temperatures above 800°C to a fluorite type zirconium oxidenitride phase, nitrogen gas, and ZrN.
