A new useful method for the preparation of disubstituted maleic anhydrides, most of them bearing additional functional groups in the side chain, is described.The key step of the synthesis consists of the addition of 2-oxo-3H-imidazo<1,2-a>pyridinium compounds to a variety of different Michael acceptors.
