The effect of the exposure of sulphur dioxide (SO2), chlorine (Cl2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) to both chromium and copper surface-impregnated rutile titanium dioxide has been investigated. The formation of complexes between the surface-bound ions and the reagent gases is proposed to occur at room temperature. In the case of SO2, further reaction is found to occur, and a new paramagnetic species is formed bound to the rutile surface. It is proposed to be the superoxide radical anion. This breakdown of SO2 is demonstrated by both the chromium and copper impregnated TiO2 systems.
