The HO2 + HO2 and DO2 + DO2 reactions have been studied in the gas phase by using the flash photolysis-ultraviolet absorption technique.Measurements of k/? were made between 100 and 700 torr of He, Ar, N2, O2 and SF6 to investigate the effect of different collision partners.A strong dependence of k/? on total pressure was observed for each diluent gas with the rate constant being linearly related to the total pressure. The absolute absorption cross sections of both HO2 and DO2 were measured at 227.5 nm.The yield of H2O2 from the reaction was observed to be 0.50 +/- 0.12 per molecule of HO2 reacted, in agreement with the expected stoichiometry. The enhancement of the observed rate constant by water vapor was studied with the results in good agreement with previous investigations.Measurements were made of the DO2 + DO2 rate constant with a pressure effect similar to the HO2 + HO2 reaction being observed.
