Self-activation and 1,8-stereoinduction in a boronate-substituted dienophile
Kennedy, Jason W. J.,Hall, Dennis G.
, p. 477 - 479 (2002)
The [4+2] cycloaddition of ortho-boronoanilide dienophile 4 with cyclopentadiene was found to proceed faster than both its para isomer 8 and the unsubstituted derivative 6, thereby confirming that self-activation by internal coordination is operative in the case of 4. Chiral boronic esters derivatives 9 and 10 provided a small level of remote 1,8-stereoinduction. These results show that dialkoxyboronic esters can operate as weak, internal Lewis acids and activate carbonyl-containing functionalities in cycloaddition reactions.
Photoinitiated long-lived charge separation with near-unity quantum yield in donor-acceptor1-acceptor2 systems for artificial photosynthesis
Han, Won-Sik,Veldkamp, Brad S.,Dyar, Scott M.,Eaton, Samuel W.,Wasielewski, Michael R.
, p. 4925 - 4935 (2017)
We report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of isomeric donor-acceptor1-acceptor2 (D-A1-A2) triads each comprising a perylene donor (D) connected by a xylene bridge to a naphthalene-1,8-dicarboximide primary acceptor (NMI, A1) that is, in turn, covalently linked to a naphthalene-1,4:5,8-bis(dicarboximide) secondary acceptor (NDI, A2) through a benzene ring at its ortho, meta or para positions (Per-Xy-NMI-x-NDI). Selective photoexcitation of Per produces both Per+? and NDI?? simultaneously with time constants of ~50 ps in benzonitrile and ~80 ps in toluene with a >98% yield. This is much faster than expected for single-step electron transfer from 1*Per to NDI and is consistent with a two-step mechanism, 1*Per-Xy-NMI-x-NDI → Per+?-Xy-NMI??-x-NDI → Per+?-Xy-NMI-x-NDI??, in which the second step is much faster than the first step. In addition, preserving long-lived charge separation in these systems is found to depend on inhibiting charge recombination by a triplet radical ion pair recombination pathway.
1,3,5-Tris(2′-aminophenyl)benzene: A novel platform for molecular receptors
Pia?tek, Piotr,S?omiany, Norbert
, p. 2027 - 2030 (2006)
The synthesis of a novel, rigid, aromatic platform for molecular receptors is described. 1,3,5-Tris(2′-aminophenyl)benzene was prepared via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of 2-aminophenylboronic acid with 1,3,5-triiodobenzene in the presence of Ba(OH)2, Pd(OAc)2 and (2-biphenyl)dicyclohexylphosphine. Alternatively, one-pot borylation of 2-bromoaniline and cross-coupling of the resulting boronate ester with 1,3,5-triiodobenzene was investigated. Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart.

supporting information, p. 7814 - 7818 (2021/10/20)
A family of axially chiral azepine-containing seven-membered cyclic P,N-ligands (named Indole-azepinap) have been prepared by using l-alanine as an original chirality source. The direct chromatographic separation of two diastereomeric phosphine oxides on silica gel enabled these ligands to be easy available, allowing further structural and electronic modifications. Preliminary application of these Indole-azepinaps has been demonstrated in a Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation with high yields and moderate enantioselectivities.

In ample variety of transformations, the presence of silver as an additive or co-catalyst is believed to be innocuous for the efficiency of the operating metal catalyst. Even though Ag additives are required often as coupling partners, oxidants or halide scavengers, its role as a catalytically competent species is widely neglected in cross-coupling reactions. Most likely, this is due to the erroneously assumed incapacity of Ag to undergo 2e? redox steps. Definite proof is herein provided for the required elementary steps to accomplish the oxidative trifluoromethylation of arenes through AgI/AgIII redox catalysis (i. e. CEL coupling), namely: i) easy AgI/AgIII 2e? oxidation mediated by air; ii) bpy/phen ligation to AgIII; iii) boron-to-AgIII aryl transfer; and iv) ulterior reductive elimination of benzotrifluorides from an [aryl-AgIII-CF3] fragment. More precisely, an ultimate entry and full characterization of organosilver(III) compounds [K]+[AgIII(CF3)4]? (K-1), [(bpy)AgIII(CF3)3] (2) and [(phen)AgIII(CF3)3] (3), is described. The utility of 3 in cross-coupling has been showcased unambiguously, and a large variety of arylboron compounds was trifluoromethylated via [AgIII(aryl)(CF3)3]? intermediates. This work breaks with old stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the inability of Ag to undergo cross-coupling by itself.
Recyclable Pd2dba3/XPhos/PEG-2000 System for Efficient Borylation of Aryl Chlorides: Practical Access to Aryl Boronates

, (2021/12/02)
Pd2dba3/XPhos in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-2000) is shown to be a highly stable and efficient catalyst for the borylation of aryl chlorides with bis(pinacolato)diboron. The borylation reaction proceeds smoothly at 110 °C, delivering a wide variety of aryl boronates in good to excellent yields with high functional group tolerance. The crude products were easily isolated via simple extraction of the reaction mixture with cyclohexane. Moreover, both expensive Pd2dba3 and XPhos in PEG-2000 system could be readily recycled and reused more than six times without loss of catalytic efficiency.

A low-temperature, protecting-group-free oxidation of 2-substituted anilines has been developed to generate an electrophilic N-aryl nitrenoid intermediate that can engage in C-NAr bond formation to construct functionalized N-heterocycles. The exposure of 2-substituted anilines to PIFA and trifluoroacetic acid or 10 mol percent Sc(OTf)3 triggers nitrenoid formation, followed by productive and selective C-NAr and C-C bond formation to yield spirocyclic- or bicyclic 3H-indoles or benzazepinones. Our experiments demonstrate the breadth of these oxidative processes, uncover underlying fundamental elements that control selectivity, and demonstrate how the distinct reactivity patterns embedded in N-aryl nitrenoid reactive intermediates can enable access to functionalized 3H-indoles or benzazepinones.
I(III)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization - Migration tandem reactions of unactivated anilines

supporting information, p. 9102 - 9106 (2020/11/13)
An I(III)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization-migration tandem reaction using Selectfluor as the oxidant was developed that converts unactivated anilines into 3H-indoles is reported herein. The reaction requires as little as 1 mol % of the iodocatalyst and is mild, tolerating pyridine and thiophene functional groups, and the dependence of the diastereoselectivity of the process on the identity of the iodoarene or iodoalkane precatalyst suggests that the catalyst is present for the stereochemical determining C-N bond forming step.
Influence of meso-linker attachment on the formation of coreπ interactions in urea-functionalized porphyrins

, p. 755 - 764 (2020/09/02)
The ability to cover the face of a porphyrin macrocycle selectively is an attractive feature for concepts such as catalysis and anion binding that is reliant on porphyrin core interactions. Herein, we have synthesized a family of mono-urea functionalized porphyrin complexes with intent to investigate their potential to form coreπ interactions selectively to one face of the porphyrin macrocycle. By altering the distance between the urea moiety and the porphyrin through direct linkage or introducing a linker group we can control the formation of the core interactions. This is clearly seen in the crystal structure of 1-phenyl-3-(2-([10,15,20-triphenylporphyrinato]zinc(II)-5-yl)phenyl)urea where a unique face capping effect is demonstrated. In the crystal of this complex, there is a hydrogen-bonding network between the urea group and the axial methanol ligand forming head-to-tail aggregates with the Zn-O axis all molecules pointing in one direction.

supporting information, p. 10710 - 10713 (2020/10/02)
Efficient synthesis of o-borylphenols is achieved through the Ru-catalyzed regio- and site-selective sp2 C-H borylation of aryl diphenylphosphinites followed by removal of the phosphorus directing group. A successful application to aryl phosphites enables practical one-pot borylation of phenols, demonstrating high synthetic utility of this protocol.
