Direct Inlet Mass Spectrometry (DIMS) is used for studying mixtures of PVC with thermal stabilizers. The stabilizers used, Ba/Cd stearates and dibasic lead phosphite, have different ways of action that are followed successfully by DIMS. The method is used particularly to compare the effectiveness of these stabilizers at 160°, 200°, 240° used in ratios of 2.5 and 5.0 parts per hundred of PVC. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the volatile products during the thermal treatment with or without stabilizers are measured and discussed.
