3D hierarchical flowers of Cu3Mo2O9 (CM) assembled with two-dimensional nanosheets have been fabricated via the structure transformation of the Cu3(OH)2(MoO4)2 (CMOH) nano-cuboids. The tracing in the growth process of CMOH nanocuboids reveals that CMOH nanoparticles (NPs) are first formed followed by dispersing in the reaction system, and finally self-assemble to construct the cuboid-like single-nanocrystal with 250 ± 20 nm length by 100 ± 20 nm thickness. Subsequently, the calcination in air can transform the as-synthesized CMOH nanocuboids into the hierarchical CM flowers. It is identified that the controllable synthesis of CMOH and its calcinations are critical to forming such CM flowers, whose hierarchical features deliver the high lithium storage capacity, good cycling stability and excellent rate capability as anode for lithium ion battery.
