Nano iron oxide dispersed alkyd coating as an efficient anticorrosive coating for industrial structures

This report describes the preparation and characterization of nano iron oxide impregnated alkyd coating (NIAC) displaying excellent anticorrosive ability. Fe2O3 nanoparticles prepared via gel combustion method were used as pigments and dispersed in alkyd resin using high-energy ball milling method. The physical properties such as spreading ability, solid content, glossiness and wetting abilities were evaluated by following standard protocols. The corrosion inhibition property of NIAC was studied by weight loss method, potentio-dynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques in 3.5% NaCl solution. The quantity of iron content leached into the corrosive medium was assessed using inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. It was revealed that the dissolution of iron from steel was prevented by NIAC coating. Further, the corrosion inhibition nature of the coating was proved from potentiodynamic polarization and impedence spectroscopic techniques.
