The 1,4-biradicals generated during the photolysis of γ-methyl valerophenone interact with oxygen at nearly diffusion controlled rates. The comparison of quantum yield studies in benzene with laser photolysis experiments in methanol allow the estimation of the biradical lifetime in benzene as 42 ns at room temperature.
