DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Section cross-reference(s): 64 The stability of K benzylpenicillin (I) [113-98-4], tetracycline-HCl (II) [64-75-5], chloramphenicol (III) [56-75-7], and erythromycin (IV) [114-07-8] in the ointment bases, bentonite glycerogel (V) and Novadeps U (VI) were investigated by TLC at 3, 7, 30, 60, and 75 days. I was stable for 8 days in V after which the b-lactam nuclei is cleaved, whereas in VI it was stable for 76 days. II was found in fresh prepns. of V together with its epimers, 4-epitetracycline, anhydrotetracycline and 4-epianhydrotetracycline 14 days after prepn., and with only 4-epitetracycline in fresh prepns. of VI for the next 75 days. III was stable for 30 days in V and for 87 days in VI. IV showed a single spot in both ointment bases.
