  • People often hear men complaining they are short of sleep. In fact, owing to the work stress and the heavy housework, women have less time to sleep. “Insomnia” is popular among people, especially women. To quote what doctors say, young women need sleep, mid-aged women yearn for it and old women seek but fail to get it. 

    According to National Sleep Foundation, women between 30 and 60 years old, three of four lack sleep time, less than 8 hours. 3/4 of working mothers often feel tired. This is a serious problem and it is getting worse.

    For those young working female who also have housework burden, they have too much to do. For them, they have little time for sleep. Mid-aged women do have time for sleep, but their hormones start to change. The reduction of melatonin directly influences the sleep. Old women are not able to have a long sleep. They usually wake up at 4:00- 5:00 .a.m.

    Long- term short of sleep causes under-eye puffiness and under-eye dark circles. What’s more, there are many other damages:
    1. Their skin ages.
    2. They have a low mood, inattention and low working efficiency.
    3. They have fibromyalgia and nocturnal myoclonus.
    4. They are easy to get fat, and have more chance to suffer from breast cancer.
    5. Their stress hormone can be increased which improve the resistibility of insulin and it is the early symptom of diabetes.
    6. Their risk of getting heart disease is increased.

    If you are short of sleep and have other sleep problems, like insomnia, you need to change your bad lifestyle and ask for doctors’ help, if it is necessary. Thanks to the advanced technology, medicine has less side- effect. There is no harm when you take it for a short- term.

    Then what factors influence women’s sleep?
    1. Psychological factor: some women have acute or chronic anxiety or depression. They should throw this feeling away when go to bed. They are worried that they can not sleep. Such worry instead affects heir sleep a lot. Others are afraid of the darkness and nightmares.

    2. Environmental factor: some women are not able to sleep if they change the bed or room, especially the old women. Noise, light, coldness, hotness, uncomfortable bed, fleas, mosquitoes and other environmental factors can affect their sleep.

    3. Day and night inversion living: when someone takes a long fly and the time difference causes difficulty to sleep. Someone goes to work at night, and they can not sleep by day. They need a long time to adjust. Thus, when one’s biological clock disorder with his pace of life, he can have insomnia.

    4. The dream factor: when some women wake up from an impressive dream, especially nightmares, it is hard for them to get back to their sleep.

    5. The influence of medicine and alcohol: some women are strongly dependent on soporifics. Once they stop taking medicine, they are not able to sleep. Some people have formed the habit of drinking coffee and heavy tea when they were young. When they come into mid- age, this habit affect their sleep significantly. And often, they don’t realize this habit is the cause of insomnia.
