The strategy of highly stereoselective synthesis of multifunctional "carbohydrate-like" chain compounds starting from 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D-glyceraldehyde (2) is presented and exemplified by the preparation of alcohols 10 and 12 with arabino and ribo configuration, respectively.
