Dichloroketene adds onto the exo face of the carbonyl group of 7-oxabicyclo<2.2.1>hept-5-en-2-one to yield a dichloro-β-lactone with complete chemo- and stereoselectivity.This dichlorolactonization has been extended to other oxanorborenic systems and resulting β-lactones were transformed into the corresponding 1,3-diols.
