Expansion of nalidixic acid (NA) has been accomplished by linear insertion of a benzo-ring between the two pyrido moieties.The resulting compounds exhibit antibacterial activity comparable to NA and are highly fluorescent.The regioselective hydrogenation of 1,7-phenanthrolines was studied. - Keywords: lin-Benzo-analogs; Quinolones; Pyrido<3,2-g>quinoline; <1H,7H>Pyrido<3,2,1-gh><1,7>phenanthroline; <1H,7H>Pyrido<1,2,3-de><4,7>phenanthroline; Regioselective hydrogenation of <1,7>phenanthrolines; Fluorescence
