The action of pyridine on α-cyanoacrylic acid leads to the rapid and quantitative formation of 2,4-dicyano-4-pentenoic acid.In the presence of excess p-nitro-benzaldehyde, 1-hydroxy-1-p-nitrophenyl-2-cyano-2-butene is formed in this reaction in addition to 2,4-dicyano-4-pentenoic acid.
