The observed specificity of meta photocycloaddition of trans 1,2-dichloroethylene to benzenoid compounds is deduced to arise from a chlorine atom induced asymmetric distortion of the reaction intermediate: thermal and photochemical isomerisations of the adducts occur by an ethenylcyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement and/or 1,3- and 1,5-chlorine shifts.
