The title compounds were effectively synthesized by chemoselective reduction of (R)-methyl 2,5,12-trihydroxy-6,11-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthacene-2-carboxylate to the corresponding (R)-alcohol with lithium tri-t-butoxyaluminium hydride, followed by stereoselective C_7α-hydroxylation (the anthracycline numbering) and urethane formation.
