The reaction of dimethylaminoethylenemalonaldehyde with Grignard reagents, which proceeds through 1,4-addition and is accompanied by the loss of the dimethylamino group, gives previously unreported (2,2-diformylethenyl)cycloalkanes and α,ω-bis-(2,2-diformylethenyl)alkanes, which were characterized as dihydropyran <4+2>-cycloadducts with vinyl ethyl ether.
