The efficient synthesis of N4-substituted 1-methylcytosines

An improved procedure for the preparation of 4-chloro-1,2-dihydro-1-methyl-2-oxopyrimidine is described. This compound appeared to be an excellent substrate for the synthesis of N⁴-substituted 1-methylcytosines.
