Treatment of di-t-butyl(chloro)-2,4,6-triisopropylphenylstannane with t-butyllithium gives tetra-t-butyl-1,2-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)distannane (5) which shows restricted rotations about the Sn-C and/or Sn-Sn bonds even at high temperatures.The X-ray structure analysis of 5 reveals a very long Sn-Sn bond distance of 303.4(1) pm and an unusual arrangement of the substituents around the tin atoms.All groups adopt an eclipsed conformation with a syn orientation of the bulky aryl groups.
