3,4-Dimethylpyrrole-2-aldehyde was converted into methano (1), ethano (2) and 1,3-propano N₁₀,N₁₁-bridged dipyrrinones. At room temperature in cyclohexane the large fluorescence quantum yield associated with 1 (φ_F=0.81) falls off significantly with increasing bridge length (2:φ_F = 0.26, 3: φ_F = 0.0012).
