Our group has previously reported the synthesis, char-
acterization and biological activity of mixed-ligand Cu(II)
saccharinate complexes containing dithiocarbazate Schiff
bases [18, 19]. Most of the Cu(II) complexes tested were
found to be very active against the leukemic HL-60 cell
lines. Biological activities of the complexes reported in this
work are currently ongoing and will be reported in a future
communication.

The reaction of S-benzyldithiocarbazate, S-4-methylbenzyl-
dithiocarbazate and thiosemicarbazide with ketones,
2-acetyl-4-methylpyridine and 2-acetyl-5-methylpyridine,
yielded Schiff bases which complexed with Cu(II) sacchari-
nate to form the mixed-ligand Cu(II) saccharinate complexes.
These Schiff bases chelated to Cu(II) as uninegatively
charged tridentate NNS ligands, via their pyridine nitrogen,
azomethine nitrogen and thiolate sulfur atoms. Interestingly,
crystal analysis of [Cu(L4)sac)(H2O)]ꢀHsac showed a dis-
torted square-pyramidal structure with a non-bonded sac-
charin outside the coordination sphere.
