(2R)-Hydroxy-hexadecanoic acid and 2-oxo-hexadecanoic acid have been isolated for the first time from marine algae (Ulva pertusa and Porphyra sp.).The two acids were shown to be formed enzymatically from palmitic acid (16:0) using <1-13C>palmitic acid.
